Nigerian Gunmen Kidnap 15 Oil Workers Police say 15 Nigerians working for the energy company Nestoil have been abducted at gunpoint on the way to work. Kidnappings for ransom are common in several parts of Nigeria. Police said the 15 oil workers were kidnapped in Nigeria's southern Niger Delta region on Friday. A police spokesman, Deputy Superintendent Nnamdi Omoni, said all those abducted were Nigerians working for the local company Nestoil. He said that the bus taking the employees to work was hijacked about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of their office in Nigeria's petroleum capital of Port Harcourt early on Friday morning. "We have recovered the vehicle they were traveling in before the incident occurred. Police are currently combing bushes around the area in a bid to find and release the victims," Nnamdi said, adding that he did not believe foreigners were among those kidnapped. Despite Avengers’ ceasefire, Nigerian Air Force to deploy more troops to Niger Delta Two months after   deploying   more combat aircraft to the Niger Delta, the Nigerian Air Force has said it is set to deploy more personnel to the troubled region. The new deployments occur despite a unilateral ceasefire by a major militant group in the region, the Niger Delta Avengers. The group, responsible for most of the attacks on oil and gas facilities in the region in the past year, two weeks ago  expressed  its willingness for conditional dialogue. Sunday’s announcement by the Air Force also occurs one week after President Muhammadu Buhari  threatened  to deal with the Avengers like the government is currently dealing militarily with the Boko Haram terror group in North-eastern Nigeria. The new Air Force deployment was announced by the Chief of Air Staff , Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on Sunday, according to a statement by the Air Force spokesperson, Ayodele Famuyiwa. Mr. Fa

Weakening Naira forces Nigerian pilgrims to cut down on spending Many Nigerian pilgrims currently in Saudi Arabia for this year’s pilgrimage say they have cut down on their spending following the fall in the value of the Naira. The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that a number of the pilgrims interviewed in Medinah said they have restricted their spending to only the basics. They said they now spend only on feeding and commuting within the city. Some said they had prepared for this situation by bringing along items such as toothpaste, soap and cream, among others, to save cost. They said while there was no significant increase in the prices of many items in the shops, they still found them very expensive in comparison to their cost in Naira. “I have cut down on my expenses and I am avoiding the purchase of those gift items which I can find back home,” a pilgrim from Katsina who preferred to stay anonymous said. “This is because when I converted the pri

Lucky Irabor, the theater commander in northeastern Nigeria, told a news conference on Thursday that military authorities have confirmed that some soldiers were selling arms and ammunition to Boko Haram. He called it a betrayal of the Nigerian people. He gave no more details.
