Oba Akiolu advocates grassroots health policy

The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu has called on medical professionals in Nigeria to look into the health condition of the down trodden.

Making the call during the official commissioning of Nigeria’s first General Electric 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI, facility promoted by the Reddington Hospital in Lagos, Akiolu who hailed the feat, however said there was urgent need to address health needs at the grassroots.

“The downtrodden in our society is really suffering. Before you can come to this hospital your pockets must be full. All the top doctors need to come together, the state of our Primary Health Care, PHC, needs to be addressed, what we need to do is set up a PHC that is properly furnished and manned by qualified doctors. Many of these diseases that kill people would be checked,” he noted.

In his remark, the Chief Executive Officer, Reddington Group, Dr. Adeyemi Onabowale, said the re-launch of the MRI Centre was to create awareness.

“Our colleagues, fellow doctors, patients, private and public organisations to the array of the facilities available at the centres like the1.5T digital MRI, 64-Slice CT Scan, cardiac catheterization laboratory, digital mammography, digital fluoroscopy, digital X-Ray, 4D ultrasound scan, laboratory services and integrated PAS/RIS system.

“This cutting edge technology is the latest addition to the Purple Ray Diagnostic Centre that has, over the years, earned an enviable reputation for quality and excellence in providing superb diagnostic imaging, thoughtful patient care and radiological interpretation that is second to none. “Our drive for excellence has informed the procurement of the new MRI scanner from GE, setting new standards in imaging excellence in Nigeria.”

Onabowale said the device is capable of providing ventilation of critically ill patients, general anaesthesia to patients while scanning; exceptional image quality and speed; consistency result and efficiency; control free imaging, covers virtually all clinical areas, magnetic resonance angiography, advance visualization and silent scanning technology.

Also speaking, Professor of Radiology and President, National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria, Prof. Rasheed Arogundade, said the MRI gives a clear picture in any area of the body. “In fact you don’t even need to make skin contact to be able to make diagnosis with 1.5 Tesla.
